Real Love- DNA Test

Scripture 1 John 3:11-24

Date 30 November 2008

SpeakerBold Eric Fan

Love one another 11This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Renounce Sin- To live a Righteous life

Speaker Eric Fan

Scripture 1 John 3:4-9
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

1. Sin is of the devil (v4, 8a)
  • Sin = missing the mark

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:8

  • Genesis 3:16

  • Nothing good about sin

  • We were made to live on the love and grace of God

2. Jesus' purpose is to take away sin (v5, 8b)

"Be Real" Series

Speaker Pastor Mark Rusic

Scripture 1 John 3:1-3 (NLT)

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him. 2 Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.

How to Guard Against Anti-Christ

Speaker Eric Fan

Scripture 1 John 2:18-29

Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.

I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

  1. Guard by knowing what to look for (v18-19)
  • Matthew 7:15
    • "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."
  • Walk in accountability
  • Walk humbly as divinely inspired
  • Spirit of perseverance
  • Listening to man vs listening to God: Colossians 3:23
    • "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men"

  1. Guard by knowing the truth (v 20-23)
  • Ignorance of the truth can lead us to be easily deceived.
  • The advice that we receive and follow: are they Christ-centred?
  • Philippians 3:7-14
    • "But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead."
  1. Guard by the Spirit (v24-29)
  • 2 Tim 1:14
    • "Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us"
  • Ask God for revelation
  • John 16:18
    • "They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
  • Are we trying to establish/accomplish with our own effort without God?
  • Prayer is vital!
